Member Spotlight: Emily Ostrow

Emily Ostrow, MS, RDN, LD

Clinical nutrition manager and lead dietitian for The Aliveness Project providing community and clinical MNT for persons living with HIV/AIDS

What do you love about what you do? I love being able to combine both clinical and community nutrition in such multifaceted manner. Providing service out of a non-profit comes with many barriers however, the ability to problem solve and utilize different avenues for services has been so rewarding and progresses care.

What are the challenges? The main challenges are of course, funding and access to services. Another large challenge lies in the niche practice area that is HIV/AIDS MNT. Being one of 4 Ryan White dietitians in the state of MN, and the only one in a community setting causes a large caseload. Additionally, little is taught and discussed about HIV/AIDS MNT (& many other co-occurring conditions in this population) that it can make prescription difficult. However, with interns, research and advocacy I’m hoping that will change!

How has your MAND membership benefited you? As a MAND member from student to now practicing dietitian, I’ve been able to grow my connections to other professionals. I also hope to use my membership to bring awareness to HIV/AIDS nutrition.

What do you think is the future of nutrition and dietetics? Addressing more underserved populations and areas of nutrition such as HIV/AIDS, transgender & gender diverse, cultural diversity and more through modern mediums.

What are your favorite activities/hobbies? Exercising, creating gluten free & plant based recipes and vintage shopping

What is your favorite restaurant in Minnesota? Hai Hai
