MAND September Student/Intern Spotlight: Isabella Wiggins

Isabella Wiggins, University of Minnesota, Nutrition, Obtained BS in Nutrition 5/2022, Pursuing MS in Nutrition w/ expected graduation 5/2023
Where did you grow up? Rochester, Minnesota
Why did you choose to pursue this degree? I wanted to choose a degree that would keep me curious and eager to learn. Nutrition was always one of those things that I had a genuine curiosity for ever since my dad taught me to cook. I’m super lucky to have found a topic that has generated so many “aha” moments in my schooling.
What has surprised you about nutrition and dietetics? After four years of nutrition studies so far, I have never gotten over the knowledge gap between the general public and a dietetic professional/expert. Something that may seem so simple to me can often be complex and confusing to the people around me. Despite this, I think it’s so fun to answer questions and debunk myths that come from friends and family when they ask my thoughts.
What career path are you considering? The career path that would be best for me would be one where I can interact with people wanting my help as a dietitian. I can see myself achieving this as a clinical dietitian, working in a corporate setting, or even having a private practice. Maybe I’ll just do them all!
How has your MAND student membership benefitted you? As a student, I think one of the best things about MAND are the online webinars. I think getting information about nutrition and dietetics outside of school is a great way to build curiosity and keep my passion for the subject alive.
What other interests or hobbies do you have? If I’m not studying, updating my google calendar, or working in the hospital as a nutrition services associate, you could find me lifting weights in the gym, reading a romance novel in a park, or adding to my ever-growing list of restaurants to try in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area (I’m ALWAYS open to recommendations)!
