August Member Spotlight: Samantha Mosbrucker

Samantha Mosbrucker MPH, RD, LD

Provide us with a brief description of your job: Mom’s Meals delivers nutritious, well-balanced meals to the homes of individuals across the nation. As a dietitian with Mom’s Meals, my role is to provide nutrition education to clients with chronic illnesses as they learn to select, prepare, and eat foods that are appropriate for their health conditions while receiving these meals. I am part of a wonderful team of dietitians at Mom’s Meals who also work with chefs to develop delicious, nutritious meals; produce monthly newsletters on various nutrition topics; and connect clients with other resources in their community. In addition to my full time position with Mom’s Meals, I also have a private practice, True Wellness (truewellness_dietitian on Instagram!) which offers individual nutrition counseling and group nutrition education presentations.

What do you love about what you do? I love the ability to talk about nutrition-related topics that my clients want to talk about and assist them in setting goals that are most important to them. For me it’s an honor to be part of my clients’ health and wellness journeys; it’s exciting to watch as they reap the benefits of the changes they are making. I love being a personal cheerleader! With Mom’s Meals it is particularly rewarding to help individuals receive nourishing, tasty home-delivered meals that they may otherwise not have the ability or means to prepare on their own. Clients frequently tell me how grateful they are to receive the meals and the nutrition education, and express the benefits they have noticed from eating well-balanced, regular meals. This is music to any dietitian’s ears!
What are the challenges? The nutrition education that I provide through Mom’s Meals is included in some of the home-delivered meal programs. So, while some clients eagerly accept and want to talk with me, others are not as excited. Thus, a challenge I face is learning how to support and accept that some clients are not interested in nutrition education or lifestyle changes. I am still reminding myself that sometimes “meeting a client where they are at” is building trust and letting them know that I am here for them if/when they are ready to make small changes of some sort, or have any questions I can help answer. With private practice, a challenge is lacking resources (including time and materials) as well as lacking daily synergy with coworkers.
How has your MAND membership benefited you? My MAND membership has helped me to stay connected with fellow dietitians and feel supported in the profession. I am lucky to have a great network of dietitians and friends in this field, and I know that I have a group to turn to when I have questions or need advice. MAND also helps me to also stay current in the nutrition field. I benefit from the wide variety of educational events throughout the year; the topics tend to always be relevant and useful in my day-to-day work and/or future career plans.
What do you think is the future of nutrition and dietetics? I think that the future of nutrition and dietetics is bright and progressive! I hope that we continue to strive for diversity within the field and embrace differences in backgrounds, cultures, and body shapes/sizes. Additionally, in a world of social media influencers, diet-culture, and misinformation, I am hopeful that we as nutrition experts will come to the forefront and be the resources people turn to first for facts and support; promoting that all foods fit, nutrition isn’t “one size fits all”, and discouraging fad diets.
What are your favorite activities/hobbies? I love walking! I joke that I am basically a dog and need to be walked frequently 🙂 In the summer, I also enjoy biking around the lakes, spending time at my family’s cabin, and walking (of course) my actual dogs. In the winter, I love cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. During the pandemic I picked up a new hobby of creating my own cocktails, but discovered I’m better off following a recipe!
What is your favorite restaurant in Minnesota? This is a tough question! I love trying new restaurants. I think one of my favorite go-to restaurants that is versatile and has so many options for any meal and/or dietary need is French Meadow.
