Paul Polmanteer, Northland Community and Technical College, AAS in Dietetic Technician, May 2022
Where did you grow up? Allegan, Michigan
Why did you choose to pursue this degree? I chose to pursue an AAS in Dietetic Technician because I have been serving the military for the last 12 years as a Nutrition Care Specialist. When I joined the Army 12 years ago, I never thought I would enjoy helping people achieve behavioral changes. I struggled myself and still sometimes struggle to make changes to live a healthier lifestyle. Being in this profession surrounded by dietitians and dietetic technicians who care, are compassionate, and can empathize with clients/patients is why I love and continue to work in this profession.
What has surprised you about nutrition and dietetics? There is always something to learn in the field of nutrition and that is what makes it exciting. Whether it is learning about national, state, or local policies, new diet trends, or finding ways to deliver nutrition education to the population. The needs of people and their nutrition status differ from person to person. It is rewarding to get to be a part of their journey and show them how far they have come in their nutrition goals.
What career path are you considering? Right now my path is to sit for my Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR) exam. Then continue on to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). I want to join those RD’s who have given me the passion for the profession.
How has your MAND student membership benefitted you? Having a student membership has been a great way to network and meet others in the profession. Not everyone works within the same specialization and each person’s experiences are unique.
What other interests or hobbies do you have? I enjoy traveling, playing all kinds of sports, and singing during my free time.
